Bryant Rovers 3-4 Lonsdale

photo 1Jack Marston was the hero asLonsdale kick started their season this Sunday with a dramatic late win against Bryant Rovers. Lonsdale made it hard for themselves as usual as they had plenty of chances to put the game beyond reach and were eventually punished for it only for Jack Marston to complete an impressive hat trick deep into stopage time.

With a few players late and missing a couple of changes were made to the Lonsdale side that lost to May & Bakers in the opening game of the season two weeks previous to this game. The return of Tony Enifer ment Luke Gabriel had to vacat the position between the sticks and took up the right midfield role due to the late arrival of young Lonsdale star Nick Singleton. His brother Lee Singleton was suffering from flu so this ment Tez Wilson partnered Jack Wilson up front. Mark Reed returned to the middle of the park where he impressed so much in pre-season after his short break.

Before the match Garry Baker in his new bright red +F50's had a 100% record winning the toss he wanted to keep intact, this didnt go to plan though as the referee bizarley just shook the coin in his hand resulting in a bemused Baker choseing the wrong side of the coin for the first time as Lonsdale captain. The game got underway and Lonsdale had the kick, Lonsdale started brightly and used the width supplied by Albert Korogi and Luke Gabriel to good effect winning a few early corners. It wasnt all going Lonsdales way though as Bryant Rovers made their game plan loud and clear.

After a quick Lonsdale attack the Rovers defence lumped the ball up to their front too who used a good mix of power, balance and pace to get in behind the Lonsdale back four only to see Tony Enifer foil their attempt as he took the shot into his body at the near post. Lonsdale then started to create more chances and came close to going 1-0 up when Luke Gabriel curled in a shot from the edge of the area which was just tipped over the bar by the sprawling Rovers keeper.

However, all of Lonsdales good early work was quickly wipped aside by the home side, another long ball forward and another mistake at the back this time by captain Garry Baker which led to another player running through which Lonsdale seem to see every week at the moment. Unfortunatley for Baker and Lonsdale the striker made no mistake in his finish sliding the ball underneith the advancing Tony Enifer into the bottom right of the goal. A few Lonsdale heads dropped including that of captain Bakers but it wasnt long before Lonsdale showed once again their grit and determination.

Good work out on the left by the Albanian pair in the form of left back Freddie Marku and Albert Korogi enabled Korogi to whip a cross in which found the feet of Tez Wilson. Wilson then unleashed a powerful drive which was heading for the top corner but was blocked by a Rovers defender, the ball fell to the feet of Wilsons striking partner Jack Marston who quickly spun on the spot and blasted the ball into the bottom left corner with his left peg to haul Lonsdale level.

After the equaliser the Rovers back four seemed to fall to peices as Lonsdale carved their way through thier entire team displaying very attractive football building from the back and seemingly passing the ball round the Rovers team who were chasing shadows. Lonsdale by this point should have been three or four up but poor finishing from Tez Wilson and Albert Korogi when they were both played through one on one with the keeper let Rovers off the hook.

Lonsdale did eventually make a breakthrough after more good work from Korogi on the left found Jack Marston in the box who laid the ball back for the onrushing Mark Reed to blast a shot toward the bottom left corner. To the keepers dismay a Rovers player stuck out a foot in a moment of sheer panic which diverted the ball into the opposite corner and with the keeper fully commited to the initial direction was left on his backside as he watched the ball roll into the back of the net.

More chances came and went for Lonsdale who would later rue the missed chances that came their way but for the meantime Bryant Rovers just couldnt handle the passing game Lonsdale were playing around them and a few players started to become frustrated which led to a few dodgy challenges. No other major events unfolded in the first half which ment Lonsdale went into half time 2-1 up and looking very strong indeed.

After a hairdrying session at half time from their manager Bryant Rovers came out fighting in the second half. Lonsdale seemed to lose their rythem and started hoofing the ball up the pitch instead of their flowing football which caused Rovers so much trouble in the first half. Rovers were now the team on the frontfoot and started to create a few chances with quick release through balls for their strikers to chase but these were well fielded by Tony Enifer.

After all of Lonsdales misses in the first half Rovers capitalised to the dispear of the Lonsdale team. In truth everyone could see that a goal wasnt far off if Lonsdale didnt get back to the style of play they used in the first half and Rovers didnt disapoint the home fans. With Warren Bridge suffering with a rib injury and many Bryant players rushing forward to join an attack Luke Gabriel had to come all the way back to right back where he closed down the Rovers striker. However, as Gabriel lunged to block an incoming cross the ball squirmed under his leg straight into the path of his parter up from who lashed the ball into the top corner.

With Bryant Rovers feeling bouyant after their equalised Lonsdale re-took the lead in fine fashion minutes after conceeding the equaliser. Luke Gabriel found himself in center mid on the edge of the box and laid the ball off to James Devoir out on the left touchline who played a gorgeous first time cross into the box. Jack Marston brought the ball down on his chest and superbly lobbed the ball between the goalkeeper and a Rovers defender to send the away side into dreamland.

The Rovers goal before Marstons moment of magic seemed to wake the lions up and they only then started to play the ball along the floor once again after their confidence had been restored. Although their passing game had returned there still seemed to be something missing, that cutting edge that tore Rovers apart in the first half just wasnt there and Rovers managed to cope with the way Lonsdale were playing in the second half.

Lonsdale nearly put the game beyond doubt due to a quick counter attack that came from nowhere. Rovers were on the attack with a throw in down the side of the 18 yard box. The throw was launched into the box which created a slight panick before Luke Gabriel put his foot right through the ball sending it flying down the other end. Jack Marston was the quickest to react noticing the ball was certainly going to clear the back four and he raced onto the ball and proceded into the box where he would most certainly have scored had it not been for a world class tackle from a Rovers player.

Lonsdale were then made to rue that missed oppertunity as Bryant Rovers pulled back late on. Another long ball over the top was chased by Garry Baker and a Rovers striker. Enifer decided not to come out for the ball which the Rovers striker got to first. Only then did Enifer advance off his line and at this time Garry Baker challenged the young striker and got his foot to the ball. However, to his dismay the ball went straight between the legs of Enifer who had no time to react from the point blank toe poke from Baker and the ball rolled agonisingly slowly over the line.

The scoring wasnt over there though as Lonsdale showed just why they believe they have what it takes to seal promotion to Division One this season. After catching the Rovers strikers offside Freddy Marku noticed Jack Marston all alone on the far side of the pitch and picked him out with a route one pass over the Rovers defence. Marston ran onto the ball, advanced into the area and unleashed an unstopable shot into the far corner giving the Rovers keeper no chance at all and send the Lonsdale players into dreamland.
